Regenerating an Unravelling World: Serge Beddington-Behrens on Becoming a Sacred Activist
What if the greatest crisis facing humanity isn’t political division, war or climate change, but the loss of the human soul? That’s the question at the heart of Regenerating an Unravelling World, the new book from Oxford-educated psychotherapist and spiritual teacher Serge Beddington-Behrens, published by Umbria Press in autumn 2026.
His message is bold and timely: the world won’t be transformed by waiting for leaders to save us. Real change starts when ordinary people choose to become Sacred Activists, people who pair inner transformation with courageous action in service of humanity.
“The crises in our world today are all crises resulting from a lack of soul. Soul needs to return to the world.”
Not a self-help book, not a manifesto
Blending psychology, philosophy, spirituality, politics and practical activism, Regenerating an Unravelling World is neither a conventional spirituality book nor a political manifesto. It sets out how personal consciousness and social responsibility have to grow together if we’re to get through one of the most turbulent periods in our history.
Drawing on more than five decades as a psychotherapist, lecturer and spiritual educator, Beddington-Behrens argues that today’s problems, from war and authoritarianism to environmental destruction, inequality, greed and disconnection, are symptoms of a civilisation that has lost touch with compassion, purpose and the sacred.
But this is not a book of doom. Far from it.
“Our current systems may be unravelling, but this does not mean humanity is doomed. The collapse of outdated ways of thinking creates the opportunity for something wiser, kinder and more conscious to emerge.”
From Sacred Warrior to Sacred Activist
At the core of the book is the idea that spirituality should never be passive. Taking inspiration from the Samurai, Zen Buddhism and King Arthur’s Knights of the Round Table, Beddington-Behrens reclaims the archetype of the Sacred Warrior: not someone who fights destructively against others, but someone who fights for the causes they believe in. Unless we fight to preserve the noble ingredients of democracy, he warns, it will begin to wither.
Part One: Growing the Sacred Warrior
The first half looks inward. Readers are invited to build presence, resilience, courage, compassion and self-awareness while facing up to fear, ego and disconnection. Rather than quick-fix self-help, it’s a practical philosophy for becoming someone whose inner life is the foundation for responsible action. Or, as Gandhi put it:
“We need to be the change we wish to see in the world.”
Part Two: Changing the World
The second half turns outward, taking on the defining issues of our time: war, authoritarianism, fascism, political extremism, environmental collapse, corporate power, poverty, inequality and the hidden psychology of evil. Staying silent in the face of injustice, he argues, is no longer an option.
“Evil thrives because good people do nothing.”
The book introduces The Eleven Sacred Paths of the Activist, showing that activism comes in many forms. Educators, innovators, creators, investigators, initiators and compassionate leaders: everyone can be part of the solution.
A spirituality for the twenty-first century
One of the book’s big themes is that spirituality has to move beyond private wellbeing. Beddington-Behrens challenges spirituality that focuses only on personal fulfilment while ignoring the suffering of the wider world, and equally questions activism driven by anger alone. In their place he offers Sacred Activism, where love, courage, wisdom and meaningful action work together.
For him, spirituality often has little to do with religion. He quotes the Dalai Lama:
“We can develop higher human qualities such as love, compassion, wisdom, courage, forgiveness to a high degree without recourse to any religious or metaphysical system.”
The aim, he says, is to bring those higher values into our politics, business, education, relationships and every corner of daily life.
A message of hope
For all the darkness it examines, Regenerating an Unravelling World is an optimistic book. Beddington-Behrens doesn’t see the end of the world, but the end of an outdated way of living, with today’s crises part of humanity’s evolution towards a more compassionate civilisation and a new generation of conscious citizens ready to help shape it.
It leaves readers with one profound question: what kind of human being do we need to become if we are to help create the future we wish to see?
If you’re interested in sacred activism, spiritual psychology, social change, or simply finding hope and purpose in uncertain times, this one belongs on your reading list.
