DC already showed us with confidence that the world of metal and graphic novels could collide in holy matrimony with ‘Dark Knights – Metal’ and prog metal solo artist, Doug Rimington, is providing yet further proof. His project, Heart Through Sacrifice, and its debut eponymous album arrives as a 22-track colossus matched by an equally ambitious graphic novel that harkens back to the days lost where an ‘album’ was a concept to digest and to be lost in. Metalheads everywhere, this one’s for you.
Ensuring the 1 hour 46 minute runtime is no slog, Heart Through Sacrifice is a whirlwind of fantastically dark and imaginative vistas. This really comes as no surprise, however, as Rimington’s background finds him raised in New Zealand, trotting the globe and then finally settling in London with a mind brimming with potential. It results in a soundscape with such scale beyond comparison as twin vocals from Rimington and Corinne Cooper dance in and out of destructive riffs and mind-bending rhythms. It’s easy to be consumed by and that’s no bad thing.
In fact, the album itself is designed with such consumption in mind. With such an indulgent and complex narrative beyond it, Rimington claims the album is a representation of what albums used to stand for.
“Nothing beats the feeling of listening to one album on repeat for weeks on end – the culture of obsession and ‘living the band’. Heart Through Sacrifice is my love letter to those days with a meaty world to get into and some killer tunes too.” – Doug Rimington
Even if you’ve spent you life despising all things metal, this album deserved to be listened to. It is an affront to the very meaning of what an ‘album’ is today and it does so with a wicked confidence.
